📝 Abstract
Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) is characterized by insulin resistance and biochemical abnormalities. This cross-sectional study at Al-Kindy Teaching Hospital in Baghdad evaluated 50 patients for fasting glucose, HbA1c, lipid profile, renal function, electrolytes, uric acid, and HOMA-IR. Elevated glucose (80%), HbA1c (76%), and creatinine (50%) were frequent, with dyslipidemia evident through low HDL (82%) and high triglycerides (32%). Electrolyte imbalances included hyponatremia (26%) and hyperkalemia (14%). HOMA-IR confirmed insulin resistance in 76%, correlating with poor glycemic control and lipid abnormalities. In conclusion, HOMA-IR provides stronger evidence of insulin resistance in Iraqi patients with T2DM, reinforcing its role in metabolic dysfunction and highlighting the need for early detection and management strategies.
