Family law in India is characterized by a unique system of legal pluralism, wherein diverse religious communities are governed by distinct personal laws relating to marriage, divorce, inheritance, adoption, and maintenance. While this framework reflects the country's multicultural identity, it has also generated persistent concerns regarding consistency, equality, and access to justice. Against this backdrop, Article 44 of the Constitution envisions the adoption of a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) as part of the Directive Principles of State Policy, encouraging the State to secure a common civil framework for all citizens. The debate surrounding the UCC remains one of the most contested issues in contemporary Indian jurisprudence. Advocates view it as a means of advancing Gender Justice, constitutional equality, and legal certainty, whereas critics emphasize the protection of Religious Freedom, cultural diversity, and minority rights. This paper examines the evolving relationship between Legal Pluralism and constitutional values in the context of family law reform. It critically analyzes recent judicial pronouncements, legislative developments, and policy discussions that have revived the discourse on the UCC. The study further explores the implications of a uniform legal framework for Family Law Reform and assesses whether harmonization can be achieved without undermining India's pluralistic ethos. It argues that the future of family law lies not merely in uniformity but in developing an inclusive model that balances Constitutional Morality, individual rights, and cultural autonomy. The study concludes by proposing a rights-based and consensus-oriented approach to family law reform in twenty-first-century India.
