Manual assembly lines remain a cornerstone of manufacturing across industries, valued for the flexibility and dexterity that human operators provide. However, they face persistent challenges in productivity, quality consistency, and worker well-being. This review synthesizes current research on productivity improvement strategies for manual assembly lines, examining three interrelated dimensions: Lean manufacturing and operations analysis, assembly line balancing and configuration and the integration of Industry 4.0 technologies. A systematic methodology is proposed, integrating these approaches to achieve measurable productivity gains while maintaining the human-centric advantages of manual assembly. Key findings reveal that combining traditional Lean tools with emerging digital technologies can double productivity while reducing waste and improving ergonomics, though careful consideration of the human factor remains essential for successful implementation. The review concludes with recommendations for practitioners and identifies research gaps in the integration of physical and digital improvement strategies.
