This paper discusses the role of Nigeria in the promotion of ECOWAS. Nigeria has not benefited much from the organization taken into consideration the large amount of money spent and human resources wasted by the country to support ECOWAS. The paper attempts to broadening the knowledge of the people about their membership of the organization. This study relied on the facts extracted from the library and works of previous writers on the concept. Historic analysis was equally explored. The paper highlights the formation of ECOWAS on bilateral and multilateral grounds. The objective of the ECOWAS was also discussed with respect to Nigeria’s financial obligations and leadership role played. Role theory underpinned the study. The paper identified among others that if domestic political and economic problems in the country are realistically tackled the nation will experience political and economic growth. The paper concludes that there must be political will of neighbor members which is a basic element of integration in order to achieve much.
