π Abstract
This article critically analyses the notion of βfringe benefitsβ within Macauβs tourism sector, the preeminent casino hub globally. While traditional tourism research focuses on official attractions (heritage sites, luxury hotels, and gaming floors), this paper examines the informal and semi-legal advantages that influence tourist experiences and labour dynamics. Using ethnographic vignettes, policy analysis, and secondary data from 2010 to 2025, I contend that fringe benefits (such as complimentary chips, unlicensed guiding services, kickbacks for high-rollers, and sexualised entertainment) are not marginal but fundamentally integrated into Macauβs casino capitalism. These advantages serve as mechanisms for retaining tourists, exploiting labour, and transferring risk. The paper employs a methodological framework that integrates discourse analysis of Macau SAR government reports, anonymised interviews with former casino hosts, and participant observation in non-gaming areas. There are some limitations, such as not being able to get into VIP rooms and having to rely on data that is already available to the public. The results indicate that Macau's recovery from COVID-19 has increased, not decreased, its dependence on fringe economies, which raises regulatory and ethical issues. The ramifications for urban tourism governance and significant casino studies are examined.
